Responsibilities
  • Prepare monthly financial statements along with projections and cash flow summaries
  • Handle all bookkeeping aspects for clients on a weekly, monthly and quarterly basis. This includes bank and credit card reconciliations, coding transactions, analyzing client accounts, making necessary journal-entries, and monthly closing of the books
  • Assist with payroll processing, including preparation of 1099 and W-2’s
  • Assist with accounts payable function, including BillPay
  • Assist with accounts receivable management
  • Clean-up improperly maintained bookkeeping and propose how clients can improve financial accounting
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Ideal candidate will be able to work well in a fast-paced, energetic environment with a positive attitude
  • The ideal background will be around 5+ years’ experience, preferably from public accounting, and have excellent prioritization skills
  • In this position, the candidate must have well-rounded accounting/bookkeeping experience, excellent communication skills, work well in a team environment and focus on multiple clients at once
  • The candidate must have experience processing of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and month-end close procedures is required
  • Effective English verbal and written communication skills are required
  • Proficient and comfortable with common business software and telecommunications technology and adaptability to new software/technologies as required
  • Must have QuickBooks/QuickBooks Online and MS Office (Outlook, Excel and Word) experience
  • Ability to occasionally travel to client locations in the Portland metro area as needed
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality
    Maintain punctual, regular and predictable attendance
  • Knowledge of fixed assets and depreciation schedules
    Understand bookkeeping differences between entity types (C Corp, S Corp, Partnerships, sole proprietors)
  • Ability to work independently, managing multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Experience preparing 1040's is a plus

Full Charge Bookkeeper

Full Time

We are adding a Bookkeeper to support our growing practice! This is an interesting and dynamic position that may provide the perfect opportunity for an experienced bookkeeper and/or a small business accountant to take on a new challenge. In this role, you would support clients and own many of the tasks that are required to keep the accounting accurate and updated (bank and credit card reconciliations, coding transactions, analyzing client accounts, and making necessary journal-entries, for example). You’ll need to be a good team player while also adept at working independently. In addition, the ideal candidate is someone who learns quickly and strives to deliver excellent client service, embraces technology, is a good problem solver, gets along well with people, likes to have some fun, and has the curiosity and creativity to think outside the box.

Tax Senior 2-4 years

Our firm is seeking a Tax Senior to join our growing team. The successful candidate for this position requires tax experience, and will be responsible for preparation and review of individual, pass-through entity, and trust tax returns, assisting with and preparation of year-end projections. This person will also be collaborating with partners to assist on more complex tax issues and the opportunity to learn how to resolve them. This is a developmental role that allows the Tax Senior to expand and build the skills and knowledge that are necessary to become a Tax Manager.

Qualifications
  • 2 to 4 years of recent experience in public accounting
  • Experience in a paperless environment
  • Experience with preparation of individual, pass-through, and trust tax returns
    Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Proficient with use of office technology and software (Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Outlook, etc)
  • Familiarity with ProSystem FX products preferred

Winter (2023) Tax Intern

An Intern at Backstop Tax will perform a variety of tax work. They may prepare federal and state tax returns for businesses and individuals.
An Intern utilizes a variety of accounting software programs and will develop some proficiency in the use of those programs. They will begin to develop working knowledge of internal workflow and procedures, as well as organize and coordinate their schedules with supervisors.

Qualifications
  • Must be working to obtain a Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Accounting or related field and obtaining 150 semester/225 quarter college credits to be eligible to sit for the CPA Exam; anticipated graduation and CPA eligibility between December 2022 and August 2024 
  • Must be available to work at least 40 hours/week from end of January through April 15, 2023 (schedule will vary from week to week).
  • Working knowledge of basic office technology and software (MS Office Suite)
  • Must have high integrity and trustworthiness
  • Ability to learn accounting specific software and research tools
  • Must be goal oriented and have a desire to learn
  • Possess strong aptitude for analytical, technical, and problem-solving work
  • Professional communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Individual tax return preparation experience and/or graduate level tax coursework is preferred
